Transitioning to a new RFID Tag

How to update printer calibration and print templates when changing RFID tags

Overview

When changing to a new RFID tag type, two components of the printing system must be updated:

  1. RFID calibration settings on the printer

  2. The print template used in Ramp Print

These updates ensure:

  • The RFID chip encodes correctly

  • The antenna is aligned correctly

  • The printed barcode and text are not misaligned or cut off

Both updates are performed by the Ramp team via remote access before you begin using the new tags.

Part 1: Remote Access to Update Settings and Template

Ramp requires remote access to your PC to perform the following tasks.

You will need to switch the tag roll to the new tags temporarily.

Updating Calibration Settings

Ramp will calibrate the RFID to the new RFID tags. These settings are saved to a new printer profile, located in Tools → Profiles.

Once complete, Ramp will test print several tags to ensure that the new settings are correct.

Updating Print Template in Ramp Print

New tag dimensions are often slightly different. The print template needs to be update to ensure that the barcode and text placement is correct and not cut off.

Once complete, Ramp will print several test tags to ensure that the printing is satisfactory. You will be able to provide feedback for changes required.

Part 2: Switching Over Tags

Once you have run out of the old tag type, you will need to perform additional tasks as well as switching the tag roll.

What You Must Do When Switching Tags

Once you physically switch to the new tag roll, you need to switch the RFID settings to the new tag:

  1. On the printer, go to Settings → Tools → Profiles

  2. Go to Load the new profile created for the new tag type

  3. Set the printer to start with this profile by default.

Additionally, you will need to switch the default print template to the new version:

  1. Open Ramp Print

  2. Go to Settings → Printer Settings

  3. Change the Default Print Template to the new template created for the new tag type

  4. Save

Recommended Changeover Process

To ensure a smooth transition:

  1. Schedule calibration and template updates with Ramp when you first receive the new tags, and before you run out of the old tags.

  2. Once you run out of the old tags, switch to the new tag roll.

  3. Load the new printer profile.

  4. Set the new default print template.

  5. Perform a small test batch before full production. Make sure to check that the details on the tag are correct, and test scan a tag to make sure that it is the right SKU/asset.

Important Notes

  • Calibration settings and templates are tag-specific

  • Each tag type requires its own profile

  • Each tag type requires its own print template

  • Reverting to the old tag requires reloading the old profile and template

Troubleshooting

Tags Not Encoding Correctly

  • Confirm the correct printer profile is loaded

  • Confirm the correct tag roll is installed

  • Contact Ramp support if encoding errors persist

Barcode or Text Misaligned

  • Confirm the correct print template is selected

  • Print a single test label

  • Contact Ramp support if alignment issues continue
