Transitioning to a new RFID Tag

How to update printer calibration and print templates when changing RFID tags

Overview

When changing to a new RFID tag type, two components of the printing system must be updated:

  1. RFID calibration settings on the printer

  2. The print template used in Ramp Print

Both updates are performed by the Ramp team via remote access before you begin using the new tags.

What is the purpose of the update?

RFID tag suppliers frequently release new versions of tags. Ramp will recommend switching tags when there is a performance and cost benefit to you.

If the tag is from a new manufacturer, then the tag profile on the printer will need to be updated. These updates ensure:

  • The RFID chip encodes correctly

  • The antenna is aligned correctly

  • The printed barcode and text are not misaligned or cut off

Recommended Changeover Process

To ensure a smooth transition, follow the tips below.

  • Schedule calibration and template updates in advance with Ramp. This should be after you receive the new tags and before you run out of the old tags.

  • Provide Ramp remote access to perform the update. This takes about thirty minutes, and will require someone to be at the printer assisting.

  • When the old tags run out, switch out the rolls, modify the relevant settings, and perform a test print.

Schedule

Part 1: Remote Access to Update Settings and Template

This should be arranged before you run out of the old type of tag.

  1. Provide Ramp with remote access to your PC. TeamViewer Quick Support is typically used.
  2. Temporarily switch the tag roll to the new tags.
  3. Ramp will calibrate the RFID printer to the new RFID tags.
  4. Ramp will open the Ramp Print app and modify the existing printed template to ensure that the barcode and text placement is correct and not cut off.
  5. Ramp will print several test tags.
  6. Ramp will ask you to test that the appearance of the tags are correct, and the tags scan correctly with the RFID handheld.

Part 2: Switching Over Tags

Once you physically switch to the new tag roll, you will need to update the RFID printer and Ramp Print app to ensure that the new settings and template are used.

  1. On the RFID printer, go to Settings → Tools → Profiles

  2. Go to Load the new profile created for the new tag type

  3. Set the printer to start with this profile by default.

  4. Open Ramp Print

  5. Go to Settings → Printer Settings

  6. Change the Default Print Template to the new template created for the new tag type

  7. Save.

You can begin printing the new tags.

Ramp recommends printing off a single tag first, and checking that the appearance is correct and the tag is scanned by the handheld.

Important Notes

  • Calibration settings and templates are tag-specific

  • Each tag type requires its own profile

  • Each tag type requires its own print template

  • Reverting to the old tag requires reloading the old profile and template

Troubleshooting

Tags Not Encoding Correctly

  • Confirm the correct printer profile is loaded

  • Confirm the correct tag roll is installed

  • Contact Ramp support if encoding errors persist

Barcode or Text Misaligned

  • Confirm the correct print template is selected

  • Print a single test label

  • Contact Ramp support if alignment issues continue
